For drivers

How to give a product sponsor feedback it can actually use

Create credible product feedback for a racing sponsor by recording conditions, observations and limitations instead of making unsupported claims.

When a product sponsor asks for feedback, “it worked great” gives its team little to investigate. Describe what you used, the conditions and what you observed. Keep an opinion about the product separate from a claim you have not tested.

You do not need to pretend to be a laboratory. You need to answer the brand’s specific question accurately, using evidence from the experience you can genuinely describe.

Confirm that the brand wants this work

A product arrangement does not automatically appoint you as a development driver. Ask whether feedback is wanted, which questions matter and who should receive it. The marketing contact may need to connect you with someone else.

Use only equipment appropriate for your activity and approved under the relevant rules. Sponsorship is not a reason to change safety-critical setup or ignore the responsible engineer’s instructions.

A worked example: describe the observation

Hypothetical example: a driver uses an approved storage bag for tools during two race weekends. The brand asks whether the internal layout works during travel and setup.

The driver records the bag model, contents, transport conditions and photographs. They note that one pocket was difficult to reach when the bag was packed, while the main opening remained accessible. They identify the observation as their own experience with that load.

That is more useful than declaring the bag “the best in motorsport.” It gives the brand a specific question to investigate without inventing a comparative test.

Separate facts, impressions and suggested changes

A photograph of a damaged seam is evidence of the condition. Your view that a different handle might be easier to use is a suggestion. A claim that the design fails more often than a competing product requires evidence you probably do not have.

Keep the categories clear. Include ordinary results as well as problems; otherwise the brand cannot understand the complete experience. If conditions changed between uses, record the change instead of attributing the difference to the product alone.

Send private feedback to the agreed recipient. Confirm what can be discussed publicly before turning an internal observation into a sponsored post or performance claim. A brand relationship should not require you to invent praise.

Make the next version of the work better

Ask whether the information answered the team’s question and what they need next. The useful outcome may be a clearer instruction, a follow-up question or no further action. Do not describe every suggestion as a product improvement the company adopted.

Over time, a record of reliable observations can demonstrate a capability that a race-results list cannot. That capability still needs a buyer who values it.

Three actions for useful product feedback

  1. Confirm the question, recipient and appropriate use conditions.
  2. Record the product, context and specific observations with evidence.
  3. Distinguish feedback delivered from changes the brand confirms it made.

Read what your sponsor actually received to record the work, and in-kind sponsorship economics to assess the wider arrangement.
