How to report sales from your sponsorship discount code

Learn what affiliate-code sales prove, what they miss and how to report racing sponsorship results without confusing revenue with profit.

A sponsorship discount code lets customers identify your promotion when they buy. If the arrangement pays you a commission on eligible purchases, it is also an affiliate code. Either way, the useful question is the same: what sales can the brand verify, and what do those figures tell you?

Report the eligible orders, reporting period and returns clearly. Keep sales revenue separate from your commission and the brand’s profit. That gives your sponsor evidence it can evaluate without overstating what your content achieved.

Start with the question the sponsor wants answered

A code can record transactions, encourage a first purchase or reward existing customers. Those are different purposes. Ask which one the brand wants to measure before the campaign starts.

If it wants new customers, can it distinguish first-time buyers from existing ones? If it wants product trials, can it identify purchases of that product? If it wants local store visits, an online code alone will miss part of the activity.

A worked example: the number gets smaller and more useful

Hypothetical example: a brand dashboard shows 24 orders using a driver’s code during a four-week campaign. Two orders are cancelled. The remaining 22 produce £1,540 in recorded sales. The brand identifies seven first-time customers.

A useful report says precisely that. It should also state whether the £1,540 includes tax, shipping or discounts, using the brand’s definition. It should not say the driver generated £1,540 in profit or acquired 22 new customers.

The brand may have manufacturing, fulfilment and campaign costs. Some customers may have bought anyway. Conversely, people may have discovered the product through the driver and purchased without the code. Neither direction can be quantified from this dashboard alone.

Give the sponsor something it can use next

Connect the data to the content. Which post included the code? When did it go live? What product did it feature? Keep the published link and the approved screenshot alongside the result.

If the driver posted once and the sponsor ran several other promotions, describe the overlap. If a code was shared elsewhere, record that too. Avoid adding different analytics totals together unless you know they measure separate activity.

A low code total is a reason to investigate the offer, audience, buying cycle and tracking. It is not automatically proof that the relationship has no value. Equally, reach cannot be substituted for missing sales when sales were the agreed objective.

Three actions before your next campaign

  1. Agree what a successful tracked order means and who supplies the data.
  2. Save the campaign dates, content links and code terms before posting.
  3. Report confirmed orders and limitations, then agree one change to test.

For the wider reporting structure, read what your sponsor actually received. If the offer is still unclear, work through your first sponsorship call.
